You think you have prepared for any and all emergencies....
Our llamas lay awake at night coming up with new and trickier predicaments to test us with. They test our resolve to keep everyone safe way too often.
We live in a valley in the north Georgia Mountains. The loggers came through last year and cut way too much. Mud slides came down upon us in two areas of the ranch and emptied into the 8 acre pond. The mud flooded one barn and the show car shop as well. We had a tremendous amount of damage.
Just looking at the edge of the pond in these two areas, one would think that they could walk in the shallow water with ease. This must be what Malaina was thinking when she started across the corner of the pond to visit another barn. Half way across, she found herself stranded --- standing almost up to her back in goo. It was lucky Jack found her because not only was she mostly hidden in the mud, but she was down in among the bushes and trees. She was clear and alert and not much mud on her face and neck from struggle. Malaina was not in there very long. Everyone on the ranch went scampering in different directions for everything we would need to pull her out. Jack waded in with a six inch wide tow strap to go around her middle. Cindy waded in with a halter and lead. I happen to have a camera in my Kubota 4 wheeler. We connected the tow strap around Malaina's body by the upper chest and attached it to the 4 wheeler. Slowly she was pulled out of the mud. After which we had Cindy and Jack to rescue because movement on their own was not going to happen! Oh the joys of ranch life.
