Llamas require routine maintenance, as do any other species of animal. Annual vaccinating, regular de-worming, toenail trimming and cutting of fighting teeth are all a part of owning and managing llamas.
One basic aspect of herd health is to know your animals. Spend time with them daily and learn their personalities (you'll find that they each have different characteristics that make them as individual as the people you know!). Llamas are stoic and it is difficult to tell if they aren't feeling quite right unless you know each of them and can identify any subtle change in their behavior, which can signal an illness or injury. While there are many books and videos available that deal with llama care, one must-have book is Caring for Llamas: A Health and Management Guide written by Clare Hoffman, DVM, and Ingrid Asmus. It is available online through Useful Llama Items (http://www.useful-items.com)/. The book covers toenail trimming, birthing, vaccinating, basic herd health, behavior, teeth cutting as well as other topics in easy to understand text and drawings. Remember, in an emergency ALWAYS call your Vet first, then you can look for more information and support on the Internet. |
